Election for custodian to Wikiversidade PT edit

As Hillgentleman (Talk | Email | Contribs | SulUtil) sugested to me, we should have 1 custodian active for each of our languages, to help maintenance.

So we start a discussion in Talk:Wikiversidade:Projeto#Administrador.

Rjclaudio 19:10, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

At the closure of the discussions, please ask a bureaucrat to assess your nomination. Hillgentleman| 18:32, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Folks, I am asking the community the trust for the bureaucrat tools on Beta. I have been a custodian here for about a year. I have access to bureaucrat tools on meta: and have some experiences with robots so I know the tools. I am asking for this to help projects in incubation. Since there is not yet guidelines for bureaucrats, I am only asking for the tool as a technician, and in particular not asking for the rights to "interpret consensus in disputes". I also think there are other custodians who qualify for the bureaucrat tools.Hillgentleman| 14:48, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Problems edit

There are a few problems. If you scroll down on this page you can see links to "Geografie" and "Historie". These are already in use by, I think it is, Czech. Now it's impossible for Limburgish people to write about those things. I've searched for synonyms, but they don't exist. How could this be solved? --Ooswesthoesbes 18:31, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it is probably a bigger problem for the future. Now if you will not find a suitable way, how to solve the problem, we can recategorise our categories to Category:Geografie (CS) and Category:Historie (CS). But ill will make a problem for future import an history of these pages.--Juan 19:01, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Similar problems would have appeared in Chinese and Japanese wikiversities sharing similar pagenames during incubation - It is fortunate that Japanese wikiversity is becoming an independent project and the problem has been avoided. Since we sort and organise pages by their names, diambiguation is appropriate. Whether this is going to be a bigger problem - at least we know that "content" pages are not supposed to last forever. Hillgentleman| 16:47, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Any idea for the future, how to organise content and not overlap?--Juan 09:43, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It is unavoidable that different language would use the same character string for the same or different meanings. And we can't expect everybody to be knowledgable to such collisions beforehand. All we can do is to set up some dispute/disambiguation procedures for people to follow. I would think that the same mechanism as disambiguation in wikipedia would almost work. We even have the advantage that content pages are not going to stay forever on beta.Hillgentleman| 09:59, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, so better way is not to look for the key how to solve the problem. I think disambiguation pages can produce more problems than now.--Juan 10:17, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. They may become confusing in the long run, especially after some projects move out of incubation. Hillgentleman| 03:24, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Synonyms? I don't know about Limburgs, but in Dutch there are "Aardrijkskunde" (geography) en "Geschiedenis" (history), which I think are preferred to "Geografie" en "Historie" in the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. -- Tonymec 23:08, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a slogan of "your" Wikiversity (at beta) ? edit

I was wondering: did any of the communities from the Wikiversity projects here at beta think about creating a slogan ?

Well, we could argue now what should come first: creating content or making a slogan ?

Besides the aspect that the slogan represents Wikiversity to the outside this could also strengthen the team feeling in the specific Wikiversity community (hey, I got you - we are all one community) and help each other to see what the other person is actually thinking about Wikiversity.

A team definition (after Högl) is:

  • a social unit with more than 2 persons,
  • whose members are recognized from the outside as such members and they see themselves as members (identity)
  • they are integrated in an organization (context)
  • and they perform together tasks through direct collaboration/team work.

I know of following slogans so far:

Wikiversity slogan / motto translation elected
German slogan: Lernen und Lehren learning and teaching October 2007
English slogan: set learning free May 2007
English motto: open learning community August 2007
French slogan: La communauté pédagogique libre free pedagogic community after May 2007
(was changed a few times)
Greek slogan: Ελεύθερη Παιδαγωγική Κοινότητα free pedagogic community January 2008

Please help update the table. Thx, ----Erkan Yilmaz (Wikiversity:Chat, wiki blog) 10:57, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why Beta needs a slogan? I dont think so.--Juan 18:02, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hola Juan, it was not intentionally about beta - more for the Wikiversities being breeded (see some reasons above). But if someone wants to initiate a slogan for beta - why not ? We are all about learning and if a slogan helps us learn (something) - I say: let's go for it.
Would be great if you could elaborate more on the reasons why beta should not have a slogan ? ----Erkan Yilmaz (Wikiversity:Chat, wiki blog) 18:36, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Now I dont want to say, that Beta dont need a slogan, but it needs more time to stabilise and then the slogan can be evaluated from its past progress.--Juan 09:29, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Look at here to see how we handled this at Wikisource: We simply created a table with translations of both the project name and its slogan. We started with whatever names and slogans where initially obvious from project Main Pages, and then each language update its information one at a time over a long period. Now the chart is complete! Explanations of the translations are recorded on the talk page. You can do the same sort of thing here if you want. Dovi 02:50, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am going to copy the table above to wikiversity:motto. Please feel free to edit it. Hillgentleman| 14:13, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

page name conflicts edit

Hi, see here where some of our community members seem to be unsatisfied: meta:Proposals_for_closing_projects/Closure_of_Beta_Wikiversity#Page_name_conflicts - how can we help them and future contributors ? Some possibilities could be:

Hehe, "moving pages per language (perhaps Geography/cs ?)" - sooner or later you'll get to the more or less same system as on Incubator. This is the first step. ;-) The more languages you'll have here, the more you'll need correct and as maximal as possible separation of them from each other. Also, please keep in mind, that having this mishmash of mixed languages here disables (or at least makes much harder) quality work with many either built-in or external tools.
Danny B. 22:25, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see how having a mix of different languages is any more disabling here for tools than it is on any other project which accepts multiple languages. --Darklama 23:30, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For the example Geography/cs I had in mind the Language select feature from Meta which is used here at beta (e.g. for Wikiversity:Multilingualism/En) - I think this could perhaps be used also for other purposes. If we get to a system like incubator or not, we will see in the future then. We try to be flexible in our decisions - every new editor brings new experience into our brain pool. And who knows perhaps we merge even in the future all separate WVs again back to beta - who can foresee the future ?
Could you tell some tools - perhaps we can use them anyways or find substitutions ? Glad for any hint you can share. ----Erkan Yilmaz (Wikiversity:Chat, wiki blog) 00:25, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Another possibility could be to use pseudo namespaces, for instance Dutch:, Russia:, French:, etc., but written using the language's spelling and alphabet. --Darklama 23:30, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I thought this issue was decided long ago in favor of using subpages. For example, Wikiversity:Research guidelines links to subpages such as Wikiversity:Research guidelines/En and Wikiversity:Research guidelines/El. Is this use of subpages only done in the Wikiversity namespace? --JWSchmidt 14:32, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. That why I got many problems while importing many projects -VasilievVV 16:43, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No. This method has been used on some templates. However, since pages of learning resources on beta are on a more transient nature, and on top of that, the same character string could have completely different meanings in different languages (e.g. gift/En and gift/De would be completely unrelated), we have not been using this too often. Hillgentleman| 17:58, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"That why I got many problems while importing many projects" <-- I do not understand what this means. What was being imported to where and what were the problems? --JWSchmidt 02:02, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. From experience at Wikisource.org (similar to beta.wikiversity) I can tell you that the real problem here is that there are still so few Wikiversity subdomains. That is why two similarly-spelled European languages such as Limburgish & Czech find themselves having page-name conflicts. But at Wikisource, where there are already over 50 language subdomains for the largest languages, the many smaller languages using wikisource.org rarely encounter page-name conflicts. So then the question becomes what to do here at Wikiversity in the meantime, while at the same time pursuing subdomain implementation for active languages with a lot of material... I doubt that any technical solution here needs to be as cumbersome as the incubator. Dovi 02:42, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was perhaps intentional that we on wikiversity have forgone any strict naming convention (nothing more than ".../Zh" )and favoured simplicity and efficiency, so that wikiversitians have the easiest time collaborating and generating educational resources and can "hit the ground running". The idea is that, hopefully, we can get sufficiently many wikiversities off the ground before any need of "wv:kk:..." at all. And in my opinion it has worked and is still working well. Suggestion for chart of "Wikiversity - Set learning free" in many languages edit

Hi, I don't know how many of you are familiar with this chart, available at the multilingual Wikisource. It is a way of helping all independent language projects to help fell part of the larger Wikisource in all languages.

The same thing could be done here, too, for "Wikiversity" and "Set learning free." Each language, whether at their own independent language wiki or here at Beta, supply the their own freely chosen version of the name and slogan of the project.

I started this at Wikisource by initially seeding the chart with some of the most obvious languages, then requesting others to supply their own information. After a short time the idea "took off" to the extent that languages come on their own to add and correct information, and I don't think there is a single extant Wikisource language not currently represented in the chart.

Also note how clicking on the "Wikisource" image and on the Main Page images works.

This is just a suggestion; implement it if you like at Wikiversity (you can copy the chart and adapt it to your needs). I'd be gratified if it made a positive contribution to international sense of community here at Beta. Dovi 19:34, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Dovi, thank you for your contribution. There is already existing Wikiversity:Motto - as you can see there are already (different) mottos. Also there is available www.wikiversity.org (where not all WVs have a real "own" slogan) (someone else also sees that the pt.WV is out of symmetry?). We could use these things to make it "bigger" then ? I sometimes noticed that people (especially from English speaking countries) didn't know that the wikimedia project they see also exists in another language :-( ----Erkan Yilmaz (Wikiversity:Chat, wiki blog) 19:48, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Asymmetry - you are welcome to help fix it at meta:Www.wikiversity.org_template/temp. Thanks. Hillgentleman| 05:05, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the link to the "motto" page. I didn't know it was there, and it's nice to see that you thought of something similar yourselves. One difference is that it doesn't include the name of the project itself ("Wikiversity" in many languages). Also, since you have both slogans and mottos (in at least some languages), you might want to put them in two separate columns. A "sort" function would also be nice; if you look at the Wikisource chart, the function allows you to view translations sorted according to language families.
The Wikiversity Motto chart can, of course, be modified over time. It seems to me that the main thing it needs at this point if for contributors in the various languages to be contacted to supply their own versions, both at subdomains and at the local language Main Pages here at Beta. I'll see what I can do for at least a couple of languages. Dovi 15:07, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting custodianship (Kanjy) edit

Sorry if I am posting this request at a wrong page. I would like to be one of custodians here. I am a custodian at Japanese Wikiversity, and have been an admin at Japanese Wikipedia since August 2006. I am an SWMT member, interested in fighting with cross-wiki vandals. My language skill is ja-N, en-2, de-1, es-1/2 (a half), fr-1/2 and zh-1/2.

I am surprised that here are vandalism postings in Japanese far more than I supposed. As a Japanese Wikimedian, I was happy we have got our own Japanese Wikiversity. Today I realized that I took only good fruits away, and left such serious vandalism behind.

I thank Hillgentleman for informing us the problematic postings. I regret I was away for months. --Kanjy 11:59, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notes edit

Well, the first line I dont like to explain more. The second dont know how to explain - looks clear to me.--Juan 10:43, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Juan, thanks for your comments. Perhaps I could understand what you say if I were now requesting temporal custodianship dedicated to deal with the single series of vandalism in prograss. I am requesting regular custodianship, not temporal. However, I don't know whether each custodian here is a regular custodian or a temporal one.
Either will be fine with me, to share custodial tasks, or to stay active in requesting custodian actions. If here are too many custodians, I should not be another. --Kanjy 03:32, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Juan, I wouldn't exactly call Miyazaki a vandal; from what I can see, he is not trying to destroy anything or disrupt our work; He is just trying to use wikiversity to post his collection of favourite topics and data. It is problematic that he doesn't respect copyright and refuses to communicate, but I would call it a mistake rather than malice. And I don't think he is trying to frighten us.
Kanjy, It is of course great to have as many custodians in as many languages as possible. Hillgentleman| 04:02, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, OK.--Juan 12:34, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request for permanent custodianship (Juan) edit

Hi, in a very short time cs Wikiversity will completly move from Beta. So I would like to ask here for permanent custodianship. As I had here just temporary rights, even Kanjy pointed I am not listed on the temporary administrator list on Meta, I requested for permanent one: [2] (on the bottom). I would like to focus on these 3 (4) things:

  • help new language communities to Incubate and communicate via Beta (as we (cs.wv) incubated here more than 1 year, I know how it works here and sometimes people are lost in this issue)
  • patrol recent changes (protect against vandalism, welcome new users, put language categories)
  • tidy up (after the left of some projects, there are still lot of their pages in here. There is a need to find out why, and possible delete them)
  • help multilingual project driven via Beta (possible future task)--Juan 12:56, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Beta as an interlingual link edit

Guys,

Currently beta is not in the interlingual links; it makes linking to beta unintuitive (betawikiversity:) and the links do not show up on the bar on the left. It may have a negative effect on the traffic. More importantly, if beta is to host multilingual learning resources permenantly (since they may not find a natural home in any wikiversity language project), we would almost certainly need this link.

So is it a good idea to ask the developers add an interlingual link "beta"? Or should we wait until multilingual resources start to pile up here? (Or perhaps when beta-wikibooks is started?) I must confess that I am not sure how exactly it should be done (ie which .php file need to be changed) technically, but I just want to get some comments. I've noticed this fact too. I think that beta wikiversity should be as an interlingual link. Also we may should reconsider the link to beta from betawikiversity: to sth simplier for example beta: What do you think?--ZaDiak(T)(C)@ 23:03, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure we should add beta: to meta:interwiki map because beta is a very generic name. However, in any wikiversity site: it is natural to have beta: pointing to here. Hillgentleman| 02:56, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The year 2008 was declared by the General Assembly of the United Nations as The International Year of Languages. Beta has now started regarding this a learning resource: International Year of Languages, ----Erkan Yilmaz 11:56, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request for bot flag edit

Can I become an admin I have created templates that I need to protect from vandalism and also protect a few other pages from being created. BountyHunter2008 14:38, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Given your actions on metawiki, where you've just been blocked, I'd strongly recommend against giving you admin tools. guillom 14:51, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you need to protect some templates ask on Wikiversity:Request custodian action and you dont need an admin rights. Anyway, were are the templates you have created? Because I dont see nothing in your contribs: [4].--Juan 11:37, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Permanent custodian edit

Hi, I saw the request of Juan so I decided to make one too. I would like to become a permanent custodian.

I would like to help some new participators here like Hillgentleman or Erkan did with me in order to create their wiki.

Also I think that by remaining a custodian I will help the project in which I contribute (el.wv) start participating in the discussions about wv and its future.

Finally I don't think we should distinguish custodians as permanent or temporary. If you are a custodian you should not be temporary, but permanent. I think so because if you are a custodian in here and the language in which you participate creates its own wiki you will also need to be here to represent your wiki in the general discussions about the future of the project.--ZaDiak(T)(C)@ 19:36, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since about temp./perm. custodianship was talked before: why not clarify this on Wikiversity:Custodians - what's your view ? Custodianship in my view is "no big deal". Any help is welcome. Please give us your support also in the future ZaDiak, ----Erkan Yilmaz 22:41, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Japonese wikiversity edit

Maybe these pages wich are now include in the japonese wikiversity can be propose to the deletion ? Crochet.david 17:48, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree for the most part of them. However, some help pages et cetera are for Beta, not for Japanese Wikiversity. --Kanjy 10:51, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Let's start with pages prefixed by "school:, portal: and topic:". Hillgentleman| 13:48, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Hillgentleman. Japanese Wikiversitarians, how do you think? On ja:WV:VP I wrote an invitatin to this discussion. --Kanjy 14:56, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe, these pages would be useful for members of other wikiversities, which not yet separated? Nik We 17:08, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nik We, That would be possible also. But some of those pages have now been transwiki-ed to ja:, and the pages here are just shadows and they are not maintained. The pages on ja: would be more useful than their cousins here. Hillgentleman <| ~ |> 03:16, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Russian beta wikiversity edit

Can I change russian beta wikiversity main page from this-like to something like main page of English Wikiversity? I think, it will be helpful. Now people cannot see, what we have and what we need. Nik We 17:14, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nik We, Privet! That is up to the Russian Wikiversitians. Beta is different from other language wikiversities, but you may try to see if your idea works. If you like, you may move the current Заглавная страница to another page as an introduction to Beta in Russian until you have set up Russian Wikiversity on its own site. Hillgentleman <| ~ |> 03:13, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for answer! I will try. Nik We 12:25, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

language 'beta' edit

The default language in Special:Preferences is 'beta'. I have raised bugzilla:15992 to have this fixed. --John Vandenberg 09:55, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Please read also #Beta as an interlingual link above. Hillgentleman <| ~ |> 16:28, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

technical question edit

If you see this problem, clear your browser cache.

We seem to be having trouble with navigation templates again. Does anyone else see a problem at Template:Research discussions? --JWSchmidt 14:55, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It looks fine.--ZaDiak(T)(C)@ 16:01, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the feedback. I finally got my browser cache to update and now it looks good again. -JWSchmidt 16:07, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, nothing new for me. I am just a little bit furious, of that rule to translate all messages. This is not a good way as we see here. If cs woudlnt got translated 60% of messages I would not be working on proposal.--Juan 07:25, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
